Chioggia

Wir verbringen drei Tage in Chioggia in der Lagune von Venedig. An zwei der Tage fahren wir mit Boot und Bus (Vaporetto Linie 11) zur Stadtbesichtigung und Biennale-Besuch nach Venedig.
In Chioggia ist die Fischerei sehr gegenwärtig. Am mittleren, schmalsten der drei die Altstadt durchteilenden Kanäle, dem Canale della Vena, sind nur kleine offene Boote. Der Kanal ist schmal und die vielen Brücken sind niedrig. Direkt am Kanal liegt der in einer festen Zeltstruktur einem historischen Gebäude vorgelagert der Mercato del Pesce – der Fischmarkt.

We spend three days in Chioggia in the Venice lagoon. On two of the days we travel by boat and bus (vaporetto line 11) to Venice for a tour of the city and a visit to the Biennale.
Fishing is very much alive in Chioggia. There are only small open boats on the middle, narrowest of the three canals that run through the historic centre, the Canale della Vena. The canal is narrow and the many bridges are low. The Mercato del Pesce – the fish market – is located directly on the canal in a permanent tent structure in front of a historic building.

Ich stehe früh auf und gehe dorthin. Erst sind hauptsächlich die Händler da. Ich stelle mich an den hinteren Stand, wo gerade Tintenfische geputzt werden.

I get up early and go to the fish market. At first it’s mainly the fish mongers. I go to the stall at the back where they are cleaning squid.

Längs des östlichen Kanales, dem Canale San Domenico, liegen auf der ganzen Länge Fischerboote an der Kaimauer, große Maschinen, der Name eines Schiffes, “Predatore” – Raubtier – beschreibt ihren Zweck.
Abgesehen von der modernen Elektronik an den niedrigen Masten, dem Radar und den schnurrhaartartigen Antennen, sieht die Mechanik roh und stark abgenutzt und komplex aus – wir Touristen können über die genauen Funktionen nur rätseln, sind aber von ihrer Aura der Authentizität fasziniert.
Diese Aura erstreckt sich auch auf die Restaurants, wo unsere größte Befürchtung ist, dass der servierte Fisch nicht aus der Region stammen, sondern importiert sein könnte, während uns weniger schert, dass das Mittelmeer stark überfischt ist und die Fangbeschränkungen für gefährdete Arten regelmäßig hinter den wissenschaftlichen Empfehlungen zum Erhalt der Bestände zurückbleiben, was auf eine effiziente Lobbyarbeit zurückzuführen ist (die sich diese Aura der Authentizität und das Image der ‘hart und ehrlich arbeitenden Männer’ zunutze macht, das der Industrie anhaftet).

Along the entire length of the eastern canal, the Canale San Domenico, fishing boats are moored at the quay wall, large machines, the name of one ship, “Predatore” – predator – describes their purpose.
Apart from the modern electronics on the low masts, the radar and the whisker-like antennas, the mechanics look crude and heavily worn, but complex – we tourists can only guess at their exact functions, but are fascinated by their aura of authenticity.
This aura also extends to the restaurants, where our greatest fear is that the fish served might not be local but imported, while we care less that the Mediterranean is heavily overfished and catch quotas for endangered species regularly fall short of scientific recommendations to conserve stocks, thanks to effective lobbying (which capitalises on this aura of authenticity and the ‘hard and honest working man’ image attached to the industry).

Am westlichen Canale Lombardo liegen diese Boote zum Sammeln von Vongole (gerillten Teppichmuscheln).
Ich weiß nicht, wie diese Mechanik funktioniert, aber ich vermute, dass sie irgendwie zum Abschaben des Grundes und Aussieben der Muscheln dient.
Ich habe einige dieser Boote in der Nähe der Küste in der Lagune schwimmen sehen.

These boats for collecting vongole (grooved carpet mussels) are moored on the western Canale Lombardo.
I don’t know how this mechanism works, but I suspect that it is somehow used to scrape the bottom and sift out the mussels.
I have seen some of these boats floating in the lagoon near the coast.

An unserem letzten Tag in Chioggia haben wir einmal sehr gut gekochten Fisch in einer Trattoria am Canale della Vena gegessen, bevor wir zurück nach Berlin fahren.

On our last day in Chioggia, we ate some very well cooked fish in a trattoria on the Canale della Vena before travelling back to Berlin the next day.
