Am letzten Wochenende fahre ich mit dem Bus nach Prag. Die dortige ‘Urbansketchers’-Gruppe veranstatltet ein ‘Sketchfest’, dh. es gibt vom 01.-20. Februar jeden Tag ein Zeichentreffen in Prag.
On the last weekend I go to Prague by bus. The ‘Urbansketchers Prague’ group is organizing a ‘Sketchfest’ – there will be a drawing meetings in Prague every day from February 1st to 20th.
Am Samstag treffen wir uns auf der Burg und Zeichnen im und um den Veitsdom.
On Saturday we meet in the Castle and draw in and around St. Vitus Cathedral.
Zu Mittag Mittag mit Mitzeichnern – die Organisatoren Rajesh und Jan und viele nette Menschen – am Tisch des Museumsrestaurants.
Lunch with co-Sketchers – the organisators Rajesh and Jan and many nice people – at a table in the museum restaurant.
Unterhalb der Burg gibt ist auf dem ‘Malostranské náměstí’ einr Tramstation – neben dem (ungefähr) abgebildeten modernen Zug passieren unterschiedliche Straßenbahnen aus verschiedenen Jahrzehnten den Platz.
Below the castle there is a tram station on the ‘Malostranské náměstí’ – aside of the (approximately) pictured modern train different trams from different decades pass the square.
Ich habe am Abend noch kurz Zeit, ein Stück Burgmauer zu skizzieren bevor wir in ein nahes Restaurant gehen.
In the evening I got a bit of time to sketch a piece of the castel-walls, before we go to another resataurant nearby.
Am nächsten Morgen zum Nationalmuseum am Wenzelplatz – ich zeichne Karel Pragers ca. 1969 gebaute Erweiterung – das 1938 von Josef Rössler gebaute ehemalige Börsengebäude sollte die Tschecheslovakische Föderalversammlung aufnehmen. Von 1995 – 2008 war das Gebäude Sitz des ‘Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty’ und ist jetzt Teil des Nationalmuseums. Dessen von Josef Schulz ca. 1890 gebautes Hauptgebäude spiegelt sich in der Glasfassade. Touristen bleiben stehen und fotografieren sich gegenseitig vor dessen mächtiger Sandsteinfassade und ignorieren Pragers moderne Struktur in Ihrem Rücken.
The next morning to the National Museum on Wenceslas Square – I draw Karel Prager’s extension built around 1969 – the former stock exchange building built by Josef Rössler in 1938 was to house the Czechoslovak Federal Assembly. From 1995 – 2008 the building was the seat of ‘Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty’ and is now part of the National Museum. Its main building, built by Josef Schulz around 1890, is reflected in the glass façade. Tourists stop and photograph each other in front of its mighty sandstone façade, ignoring Prague’s modernist structure in their backs.
Nachmittags geht es in den Palais Lucerna – einem wundervollen ‘Einkaufs und Vergnügungszentrum’, mit Kino, Cafe, Restaurant, Musikclub und Geschäften, gebaut zwischen 1908 und 1920. An einem Eingang unter einer Kupel hängt eine Plastik von David Černý – ein totes Pferd auf dessen Bauch Wenzel in voller Rüstung reitet- eine Parodie des Wenzeldenkmals. Darunter Besucher, die sich vor Kino oder Cafe treffen und ein paar Zeichner.
In the afternoon we visit the Palais Lucerna – a wonderful ‘shopping and entertainment centre’ with cinema, café, restaurant, music club and shops, built between 1908 and 1920. At an entrance under a cupola hangs a sculpture by David Černý – a dead horse on whose belly Wenceslas rides in full armour – a parody of the Wenceslas monument. Underneath visitors who meet in front of a cinema or cafe and a few draftspeople.
Wir treffen uns nach dem Zeichnen im Cafe in der Gallerie – für mich schon das Abschiedstreffen, aber das ‘Sketchfest’ geht weiter!

After drawing we meet in the cafe in the gallery – for me it’s already the farewell meeting, but the ‘sketchfest’ goes on!
