Das ‘Hotel Panorama am Adenauerplatz’ steht leer. Ich sitze auf der Mittelinsel der Einmündung der Wilmersdorfer Straße, um fünf wird der Himmel langsam dunkel. Die Straßenlaternen springen an.
Zu Hause finde ich diesen Artikel (Paywall). Der Tagesspiegel berichtet über den “Schandfleck am Adenauerplatz” der “endlich abgerissen” werde. Damit ist nicht das Hotel gemeint. Das Gebäude wird aufgestockt und bleibt ein Hotel. Das zu dem Hotel gehörende Parkdeck wird allerdings abgerissen und durch ein neues Gebäude ersetzt, genauso wie das Wohngebäude, das hinter dem Hotel über dem Parkdeck steht – dies ist der vom Tagesspiegel so bezeichnete “Schandfleck”.
The ‘Hotel Panorama am Adenauerplatz’ is empty. I sit on the central island of the Wilmersdorfer Straße junction, at five the sky is slowly getting dark. The streetlights come on.
At home I find an article of a newspaper. The Tagesspiegel reports on the “eyesore on Adenauerplatz” that is “finally being torn down”. This does not mean the hotel. The building will be raised and will remain a hotel. However, the parking deck belonging to the hotel will be demolished and replaced by a new building, as will the residential building that stands behind the hotel above the parking deck – this is the “eyesore” so described by the Tagesspiegel.
Am Sonntag stehe ich davor, in der Waitzstraße. Die Straße ist aufgerissen, an den Leitungen wird gearbeitet. Das Haus sei schon 2012 bis 2014 entmietet worden. Trotzdem sehe ich heute, wie schon gestern, in einigen Fenstern Licht. Andere Wohnungen sehen eindeutig leer aus. Im Artikel wird berichtet, dass hier Obdachlose übernachteten.
On Sunday, I’m standing in front of it, in Waitzstraße. The street has been torn up, the pipes are being worked on. The house had already been vacated between 2012 and 2014. Nevertheless, today, as yesterday, I see light in some windows. Other flats clearly look empty. The article reports that homeless people were staying here.
Den Blick auf das Parkdeck an der Einmündung der Waitzstraße in die Lewishamstraße hatte ich schon letzte Wochen gezeichnet. Obendrauf wachsen kleine Bäume und Sträucher. Ein Bekannter erzählte angesichts des Bildes auf Facebook von der Disco, die dort unter dem Parkdeck mal war. Die wird auch in dem Zeitungsartikel erwähnt.
An Stelle des Wohnhauses und des Parkdecks würden Wohn- und Geschäftshäuser gebaut. Da wo jetzt das offene Parkdeck ist, seien wegen der ‘Lärmbelastung’ zur Lewishamstraße keine Wohnungen geplant.
I had already drawn the view of the parking deck at the junction of Waitzstraße and Lewishamstraße last week. Small trees and bushes grow on top of it. In view of the picture, an acquaintance told me on Facebook about the disco that used to be under the parking deck. It is also mentioned in the newspaper article.
Residential and commercial buildings would be built in place of the residential building and the parking deck. Where the open parking deck is now, no flats are planned because of the ‘noise pollution’ to Lewishamstraße.
Am Samstagabend zeichne ich die Quelle der genannten ‘Lärmbelastung’. Die Lewishamstraße verschwindet in einem Tunnel, Motorengeräusche reflektieren von den schallharten Wänden der Einfahrt. Auch auf den beidseits des Tunnelmauls vorbeiführenden Fahrspuren zum Abbiegen auf den Ku’damm wird recht schnell gefahren, als Radfahrer kenne und fürchte ich diese Ecke. Auf dieser Seite gibt es keinen Radweg.
Im Zeitungsartikel wird zur geplanten städtebaulichen Umgestaltung des Adenauerplatz der Baustadtrat Fabian Schmitz-Gehrlein zitiert. Er beschreibt Defizite und Maßnahmen, es sei außerdem “eine Untersuchung zu den Folgen für den Autoverkehr geplant”. Das ist die einzige Erwähnung des Wortes ‘Auto’ in dem Artikel.

On Saturday evening, I draw the source of the aforementioned ‘noise pollution’. Lewisham Street disappears into a tunnel, engine noises reflecting off the reverberant walls of the entrance. The lanes passing on both sides of the tunnel mouth to turn onto Ku’damm are also driven quite fast, as a cyclist I know and dread this corner. There is no cycle path on this side.
The newspaper article quotes Fabian Schmitz-Gehrlein, a city councillor for construction, on the planned urban redevelopment of Adenauerplatz. He describes deficits and measures, and there are also “plans for a study on the consequences for car traffic”. This is the only mention of the word ‘car’ in the article.
