I went to the 7th USk Week in Intragna, Ticino, at Casa Miravalle. The week, which includes workshops, sketch crawls, short walks – usually with the chance to swim in the river – and communal evening meals, is organised by Mario Leimbacher. The workshops are led by Eleanor Doughty, Jenny Adams, Stéphanie Senez and myself. Each of us will have the same group of 10–12 participants on two mornings; the rest of the week we’ll spend with the group.

On Sunday morning, I’m going with Stéphanie to the beach on the River Melezza, under the bridge at Golino – we’ll have a look at the location and both decide to hold our first morning session of our courses down here.

Then we’ll stroll through the narrow streets of Intragna’s old town – we’ll stop somewhere along the way and draw.

In the afternoon, the participants arrive – after the introduction, we go for lunch. Mario places his teapots – he has a large collection – on the table, and we sketch our own reflections and those of the people sitting next to us.
In the morning, I have the first part of my course, and in the afternoon there’s a very informative guided tour led by Stefan. He was born and raised in Intragne and, amongst other things, looks after the bells of the campanile, which he can control from his mobile phone. He tells us, amongst other things, about Ticino’s bell-ringing tradition and the long and terrible history of Ticino’s child chimney sweeps, to whom a moving exhibition in the local museum is dedicated. At the end of the tour, we climb the 68-metre-high Campanile. I sit right underneath a bell – Mario had thoughtfully provided us with ear protectors – and sketch the view up the Melezza Valley.

On Tuesday morning, I teach my second class at Piazza Intragna. In the afternoon, we take the train to Corcapolo and walk down the Melezza. Our first break for sketching is in Remagliasco, a village with two and a half houses and a stone bridge.

One of the residents, Carlos, comes down to the river to have a look.

We then carry on to the Ponte Romano and make our way down to the bathing spot beneath the tall stone arch bridge. After a long swim in the large pool, I sketch the stream as it gushes through the huge, smooth-worn rocks.

There’s no class on Wednesday. In the morning, we’ll take the bus to Loco in the Onsernone Valley. There, we’ll wait at the local café for the bus carrying the second group of today’s hikers. Once they’ve arrived, we’ll walk down to the Isorno, cross a bridge and then follow the river down the valley slope. Near Vaso is the Vosa di dentro estate, where we’ll be welcomed with coffee and lemonade.

I’m drawing this fig tree. Johannes, one of the people who run the place, explains that he pruned the lower branches because of the deer; the leaves and figs are only at the top, where the deer can’t reach them. The wind chime on the tree is also there because of the deer. It once tinkled in a light breeze.

Am Abend ist Markt auf der Piazza Intragna – es gibt Essen und Musik des Duos Tacalá + lokaler Unterstützung | In the evening, there’s a market in Piazza Intragna – with food and music from the duo Tacalá, plus local support acts:

Giorgio (Harmonium, Gitarre, Gesang)
+
Stefan (Geige, Mandoline)
“Bongo” (Willi) (Perkussion)
? (Gitarre)
On Thursday, I’m going along to Locarno, where Jenny is teaching the first part of her course.

Jenny explains her “warm-up exercise”. I sketch her whilst she’s doing it and colour in the picture afterwards with an acrylic marker I’ve borrowed. She suggests doing it in reverse order. I don’t really have the right materials with me, but I give it a go anyway:

After a few quick sketches on the way, we reach a churchyard, where I just take some documentary photos. Then I go shopping (for clothes and coloured pencils).

In the early afternoon, I sketch a house. The ‘Pasinelli’ signs read ‘COLOR with passion*’. Here, too, I’m afraid I follow the instructions rather half-heartedly, as I’m already running late for the sketchcrawl anyway.

The Sketchcrawl is organised by Nieves Stern and takes place at a small harbour on the shores of Lake Maggiore.

Then we have piizza on Piazza Grande.

On Friday, Jenny and Stéphanie’s second course sessions take place, and in the afternoon we’re at the Pozzo di Tegno, a swimming spot in a cove on the River Maggia near Ponte Brolla. I’m sitting on the smooth rocks between the cove and the river, sketching the Ponte Brolla power station.
After a polenta dinner at Grotto America in the evening and a final sketch crawl on Saturday morning in Intragna, the week comes to an end.
Many thanks to all the participants and colleagues, and especially to Mario for his dedicated and effortlessly relaxed organisation. It was wonderful!

After we’ve said our goodbyes, I’m staying one more night at Casa Miravalle with Mario. In the afternoon, I walk up to the bathing spot at Mulino di Costa. I arrive just in time to take shelter from a brief, heavy downpour under the stone bridge spanning the stream. I pass the time by sketching and, whilst it’s raining, patiently paint the rocks, vegetation and stream. When the rain stops and the sun comes out again, I decide to go for a swim and finish the sketch with a rather sloppy touch.
On Sunday morning, I say my goodbyes too and am now sitting on the train back to Berlin.
