Letzten Freitag war ‘open house`im c./o. Berlin im Amerikahaus beim Zoo. Die fantastische Ausstellung von Fotos von Susan Meiselas hatte ich schon gesehen, die von Bieke Depoorter will ich am nächsten Tag, wenn es etwas leerer ist, in Ruhe genauer anschauen (Die ist ebenfalls großartig) und gehe gleich in den Saal im Ausstellungsbereich im Erdgeschoß.
Last Friday was ‘open house’ at the c./o. Berlin in the Amerikahaus near station zoo. I had already seen the fantastic exhibition of photos by Susan Meiselas, and I want to take a closer look at Bieke Depoorter’s work in the other current exhibition the next day when it’s a bit emptier (It is great as well) and go to the big hall into the exhibition area.
Im Saal ist Susan Meiselas im ‘lightning talk’ mit Felix Hoffmann und Uli Baer. Sie sitzen auf der Bühne vor der Wand, in der an einer Karte Fotos und Texte zu einem Projekt über Kurdistan hängen.

Das Gespräch ist sehr inspirierend und nuanciert. Neben vielem anderen berührt mich der offene Ansatz bei der Abbildung von Menschen, der in Kontrast mit der ‘shoot and run’ Methode der Streetfotografie diskutiert wird (ohne diese herabzusetzen). Meiselas beschreibt. wie sie in Ihrem frühen ‘Porches’ Projekt an Türen klingelt und ihr fremde Menschen um Erlaubnis für ein Portrait bittet und denen später immer einen Abzug als Postkarte schickt. Sie erhält selten Antwort und fragt sich, was aus den Menschen heute wohl geworden ist.
The conversation is very inspiring and thoughtful. Among many other things, I am touched by the open approach to portraying people, which is discussed in contrast with (without disparaging) the ‘shoot and run’ method of street photography. Meiselas describes how in her early ‘Porches’ project she rang doorbells and asked strangers for permission to take a portrait, always sending them a print as a postcard, which was rarely answered.
Am Nächsten Tag schaue ich mir meiner (erwachsenen) Tochter die Ausstellung noch einmal an. Die Bühne vor der Karte mit dem Kurdistan-Projekt ist abgebaut und Besucher schauen sich die Tafeln mit Fotos und Erinnerungen von Menschen aus den kurdischen Gebieten im Irak, Türkei und Syrien an, die Susan Meiselas gesammelt hat. An der Wand daneben sind ihre Fotos, die die Ausgrabung eines Massengrabes mit kurdischen Opfern eines von Saddam Husseins Truppen begangenen Massakers im Irak dokumentieren. Fotos der Exkavation werden mit Planskizzen des forensischen Anthropolognen Jim Briscoe und Portraits von Angehörigen, die mit Fotos der Ermordeten zu deren Grab gekommen sind, ergänzt.
Am Anfang der Ausstellung beschreibt Meiselas in einem Zitat die Kamera als ein Grund, dort zu sein wo man sonst nicht sein könnte.
Ich bin tief beeindruckt von den Geschichten und Bildern, die sie so gesammelt hat und hier zeigt.
Die Ausstellung ‘Mediations’ ist bis 9. September zu sehen.
The next day, I take my (adult) daughter to see the exhibition again. The stage in front of the map with the Kurdistan project is dismantled and visitors look at the panels with photos and memories of people from the Kurdish areas in Iraq, Turkey and Syria that Susan Meiselas has collected. On the wall next to it, Meiselas documents the excavation of a mass grave with Kurdish victims of a massacre committed by Saddam Hussein’s troops in Iraq. Photos of the excavation are supplemented with sketches of plans by forensic anthropologist Jim Briscoe and portraits of relatives who came to the grave with photos of the murdered victims.
In a quote at the beginning of the exhibition, Meiselas describes the camera as a reason to be where one otherwise could not be.
I am deeply impressed by the stories and images she has collected and shows here.
The exhibition ‘mediations’ is on show till 9 September.
