I’m sitting on Rognitzstraße, directly above the motorway slip road. Ever since I’ve lived in the area, I’ve been fascinated by this house – whilst on either side of the motorway and the Ringbahn lie comparatively quiet late-19th-century residential neighbourhoods, this house, with its covered walkways and terraced balconies, is separated from the motorway – which runs past it at a lower level – only by the narrow Rognitzstraße. At the streets edge facing the motorway there are parking spaces, and on the partially open ground floor of the house there is a driveway to the underground car park. Until a few years ago, a low-rise building housing a car repair workshop stood on the now derelict plot to the left of it.
When I moved here to this neighbourhood on the other side of the motorway 26 years ago, the building was still plastered in earth-grey and had a blackish patina from exhaust fumes. At some point, it was painted salmon pink and decorated here and there with jungle motifs. Even this embellishment has now turned a somewhat greyish hue.
On the website restmoderne.de, I found an old photograph of the building before it was renovated. The year of construction is given here as 1974. Although the building looks older – the harsh Berlin conditions take their tribute – this seems to be accurate based on the details visible in the details on site. I haven’t been able to identify the architect.
