Vor dem Ausstellungraum in der Philippistraße 7 – jetzt nyt.art.space | früher povvera – steht ein flache breite Bank. Dort setzte ich mich und schaue zu, wie es langsam dunkel wird. Am Ende leuchten nur noch der Himmel rechts hinten über Auto- und Ringbahn und eine Laterne auf der anderen Straßenseite.

In front of the exhibition space at Philippistraße 7 – now nyt art.space | formerly povvera – stands a flat, wide bench. I sit down there and watch as it slowly grows dark. In the end, the last lights are the sky in the far right-hand corner above the motorway and the Ringbahn, and a street lamp on the other side of the road.

Anderthalb Blöcke von unserer Wohnung die Knobelsdorffstraße hinunter ist der Kläre-Bloch-Platz. So weit darf ich mit meinen Krücken mittlerweile laufen. Der Platz ist eine dreieckige Fläche, von der Straßenecke durch ein granitgefasstes, in die Tiefe des Platzes ansteigendes Hochbeet getrennt, mit Granitplatten belegt und einer wasserüberflossene Skulptur versehen. Ich sitze auf einer Bank mit dem Rücken zu den Wohnhäusern am Platz und schaue Richtung Knobelsdorffstraße.
Ein starker Wind weht Zweige mit grünem Laub von den Bäumen zwischen den Bänken.

One and a half blocks down Knobelsdorffstraße from our flat is Kläre-Bloch-Platz. I am currently allowed to walk that far witch my crunches. The swuare is a triangular space separated from the street corner by a raised flowerbed edged in granite that slopes down into the depth of the square; it is paved with granite slabs and features a sculpture with a water feature. I am sitting on a bench with my back to the residential buildings on the square, looking towards Knobelsdorffstraße.
A strong wind is blowing branches with green foliage from the trees between the benches.

Da unten an der Wiese steht ein schöner Stuhl neben einem Schild. Nichtraucher wäre ich, aber leider reicht die ärztliche Gehstreckenerlaubnis gerade bis ins Bad. Hier am offenen Fenster ist es auch schön. Weiter hinten unter den Baumen, die ich jetzt mal provisorisch für irgendeine Art Eichen halte, stehen Bänke, auf denen zwischendurch Krankenhauspersonal pausiert. Die schöne Pause gönne ich von Herzen, ich werde hier von einer Vielzahl von auf unterschiedliche Weise netten, kompetenten und hilfreichen Menschen betreut.

Down there by the meadow, there’s a lovely chair next to a sign. I’d be a non-smoker, but unfortunately my doctor’s permission to walk only extends as far as the toilet. Here, by the open window, it is nice too. Further back, under the trees – which I’ll provisionally assume are some sort of oak – there are benches where hospital staff take a break now and then. I’m genuinely happy for them to enjoy this break, as I’m being looked after here by a whole host of people who are, in their own different ways, kind, competent and helpful.

In einer Tüte im Kühlschrank waren diese Kräuterseitlinge. In Wahrheit sehen sie sehr essbar aus (wenn auch etwas zerkrümelt). | These king oyster mushrooms were in a bag in the fridge. In reality they look very edible (albeit a bit crumbly).

Ich male Pilze, anstatt rauszugehen. Eine unkritische aber lästige Verletzung nach einem dummen Fahrradsturz verhindert das Verlassen der Wohnung. | I’m drawing mushrooms instead of going out. A minor but annoying injury following a silly bike fall is stopping me from leaving the house.

Vor dem Bahnhof Zoo spricht einer der Wachleute mit ein paar jungen Typen – sie haben nichts falsch gemacht, sondern sind offenbar seine Kumpel und gratulieren ihm zum Job.

Outside Zoo station, one of the security guards is chatting to a couple of young lads – they haven’t done anything wrong. They’re his mates and are congratulating him on his new job.An eine der schrägen Stützen ist ein sehr hochwertiges Fahrrad angeschlossen. Ich fange gerade an, es zu Zeichnen, da kommt die Besitzerin in ebenso hochwertiger Kleidung inkl. Schleife im Haar und High Heels, schließt es auf und fährt weg.

A very high-quality bicycle is locked to one of the slanted posts. I’ve just started to sketch it when the owner arrives, dressed in equally high-quality clothes, complete with a bow in her hair and high heels. She unlocks it and rides offHier vor dem hinteren Zugang ist viel Betrieb, da am eigentlichen Haupteingang gebaut wird und alles hinter der Freitreppe ins Restaurant in Obergeschoss abgesperrt ist.

It’s very busy here in front of the rear entrance, as construction work is taking place at the main entrance and everything behind the steps leading up to the restaurant on the upper floor is cordoned off.Ich sitze auf einer der eigentlich mit umgekehrten Tischen als unbenutzbar markierten Bänken vor einem Starbucks. Pfandsammler laufen rum, zwei davon fragen sehr höflich, ob sie sich auch dort hin setzen dürfen. Mich stört es genauso wenig, wie die Wachleute oder die Stabucks-Leute. Einer der Männer nimmt ein paar Zigarettenstummel aus seiner Plastiktasche mit der Pfandbeute und seinen restlichen Sachen. Aus jeder der Kippen kann er noch ein paar Züge raussaugen.

I’m sitting on one of the benches outside a Starbucks that’s actually marked as unusable with upside-down tables. Bottle collectors are walking around. Two of them ask very politely if they can sit there too. It doesn’t bother me any more than it bothers the security guards or the Starbucks staff. One of the men takes a few cigarette ends out of his plastic bag containing his bottle deposits and the rest of his belongings. He can still get a few more puffs out of each of the butts.
