Unter der Ringbahn-Brücke
In Wedding unter der Ringbahn-Brücke, ich schaue vom Nordufer rüber zum Friedrich-Krause-Ufer. Da wird gerade die Gründung für das ‘Port One’ gemacht, edle Büroflächen, genau wie das ‘Upbeat’ das weiter den Spandauer Schifffahrtskanal entlang Richtung Nordhafen, links im Bild, fertiggestellt wird. Die beiden Häuser bilden das nördliche Ende der Eurocity, der neu entwickelte Stadtteil auf der Grenzbrache um den Spandauer Schifffahrtskanal, nördlich vom Hauptbahnhof.
Über mir und auf den beiden anderen Eisenbahnbrücken dieses Bahnabzweigs über dem Kanal, der Nord-Süd-Fernbahn-Brücke und der S21-Brücke, passieren Züge aller Art. Auf dem Kanal fahren Ausflugsboote, Binnenschiffe und SUPs. Auf der Uferfläche gegenüber hat jemand große Boxen aufgestellt. Sie sind nur zu zweit und beschallen beide Ufer mit drögem Dancebeat (vielleicht nur ein Test). Da wo sie sitzen und wo die Baucontainer stehen, sollen laut Website des Projektentwicklers ‘Berliner Dschungel’ hin, also entsiegelte Fläche gemäß Schwammstadtkonzept.

In Wedding, under the Ringbahn-Brücke, I look across from the north bank to Friedrich-Krause-Ufer. The foundations are currently being laid for Port One, an high-end office complex, just like Upbeat, which is being completed further along the Spandauer Schifffahrtskanal towards Nordhafen, on the left of the picture. The two buildings form the northern end of Eurocity, the newly developed district on the former border wasteland around the Spandauer Schifffahrtskanal, north of the main station.
Above me and on the two other railway bridges of this railway junction over the canal, the Nord-Süd-Fernbahn-Brücke and the S21-Brücke, trains of all kinds pass by. Excursion boats, inland waterway vessels and SUPs travel on the canal. Someone has set up large speakers on the opposite bank. There are only two of them, and they are blasting both banks with dull dance beats (perhaps just a test). According to the project developer’s website, the area where they are sitting and where the construction containers are located is to become a “Berlin jungle”, i.e. an unsealed area in accordance with the sponge city concept.

Pank- | Ecke Badstraße
An der Kreuzung Pank- | Badstraße wird gebaut, mit Brettern umfasste Löcher hinter Bauzaunelementen. Ich sitze auf dem Geländer auf dem Mittelstreifen der Pankstraße und höre mir die Musik an, die aus den offenen Fenstern der hinter mir an der Ampel wartenden Autos schallt, während ich westliche Plattenbauelemente tusche.

At the Pank- | Badstraße junction, construction is underway, holes surrounded by boards behind construction fence elements. I sit on the railing on the central strip of Pankstraße and listen to the music blaring from the open windows of the cars waiting behind me at the traffic lights while I ink western prefabricated building elements.

Tempelhofer Damm 7-21
An der Ecke Ordensmeisterstraße / Tempelhofer Damm steht ein großes Gebäude. Hinter einem 2-5 geschossigem Riegel mit Läden im Erdgeschoss am Tempelhofer Damm ragt ein weiterer Riegel mit 10 Wohngeschossen aus einem Sockel mit Supermatkt und Parknutzung. Während der die beiden unteren Geschosse des vorderen Riegel mit Alu-Panelen verkleidet sind, sieht man beim hinteren Riegel und vorne bei den 3 Obergeschossen noch den originalen warm-beigen Waschbeton.
Ich esse erstmal einen Lahmacun im türkischen Restaurant im Ladengeschäft an der Ecke und hocke mich dann auf die Verkehrsinsel in der Ordensmeisterstraße. Von hinten höre ich das Hafenfest am Tempelhofer Hafen und den Barden, der auf dessen Bühne Schnulzen bardet zu Verkehrslärm und Lalülasirenen.
Am Ende kommt ein Mann mit einem T-Shirt mit “Beyaz Saray Sofrasi”-Aufschrift aus dem Laden und schaut. Ich frage, was er über die Zukunft des Gebäudes weiß – es sei versteigert worden und er denkt, dass der neue Besitzer es sanieren und erhalten wolle.

There is a large building on the corner of Ordensmeisterstraße and Tempelhofer Damm. Behind a 2-5 storey block with shops on the ground floor on Tempelhofer Damm, another block with 10 residential floors rises from a base with a supermarket and parking facilities. While the two lower floors of the front wing are clad with aluminium panels, the original warm beige exposed aggregate concrete can still be seen on the rear wing and on the three upper floors at the front.
I eat a lahmacun at the Turkish restaurant in the shop on the corner and then sit down on the traffic island in Ordensmeisterstraße. From behind, I can hear the harbour festival at the Tempelhof Harbour and the bard singing schmaltzy songs on stage to the sound of traffic noise and sirens.
Finally, a man wearing a T-shirt with “Beyaz Saray Sofrasi” written on it comes out of the shop and has a look. I ask him what he knows about the future of the building – it has been auctioned off and he thinks the new owner wants to renovate and preserve it.

Hanadi II
‘Hanadi II’ hat um zehn natürlich zu. Sonst bekommen Damen, Herren und Kinder hier Frisur, Tattoo oder Kosmetik. Im Schaufenster sind Instrumente zur Selbstfrisur in Kartons.
Neben dem Friseur ist ein Mobilfunkladen. Davor stehen Männer und reden. Passanten und E-Roller Fahrer passieren auf dem schmalen Bürgersteig – ich habe mich neben einem abgedeckten Zweirad platziert, dass mich vor Kollisionen schützt.

‚Hanadi II‘ is of course closed at ten. On daytime, women, men and children can get a haircut, tattoo or cosmetics here. In the shop window there are boxes of instruments for self-styling.
Next to the hairdresser is a mobile phone shop. Men stand in front of it and talk. Pedestrians and e-scooter riders pass on the narrow pavement – I have positioned myself next to a covered two-wheeler to protect myself from collisions.

eurogida Badstraße
Der eurogida Supermarkt schließt um acht, zwei Männer räumen zügig das Gemüse in der Straßenauslage zusammen, und ich kann nur noch die Blech-Jalousien vor den Schaufenstern zeichnen. Die Möbel vor dem Café-Bereich bleiben stehen. Ein Mann mit Dreadlocks setzt sich. Zu Steppweste, Rucksack und Jeans trägt er rosa Plüschpantoffeln. Auf einer anderen Bank bespaßt eine junge Frau ihr Kind, bis ein Mann kommt und sie zusammen mit dem Kind im Buggy weggehen.

The Eurogida supermarket closes at eight. Two men quickly clear away the vegetables from the street display and all I can do is draw the tin blinds in front of the shop windows. The furniture in front of the café remains. A man with dreadlocks sits down. To his quilted waistcoat, rucksack and jeans he is wearing pink slippers. On another bench, a young woman is entertaining her child when a man arrives, and they leave together, pushing the child’s buggy.
Neben mir – ich hocke auf dem Bürgersteig- parkt ein Mercedes ein. Eine Frau steigt aus und sieht mich zeichnen. Sie bittet um ein Portrait. Wir vereinbaren fünf Minuten. Ein Mann, der Fahrer des Autos, erkenne ich am Schlüssel in der Hand, kommt dazu, sie fragt, ob ich sie beide zusammen zeichnen könnte, so dauert es etwas länger, bis die beiden die Zeichnung und ich ein Foto-Scan davon bekomme und ich mit der Zeichnung des geschlossenen Supermarkts weitermache.

Next to me – I’m crouching on the pavement – a Mercedes parks. A family gets out and one of them, a woman sees me drawing. She asks for a portrait. I tell her that I just want to take a photo of the drawing and am happy to draw her. We agree on five minutes. A man, the driver of the car, who I recognise by the key in his hand, joins us, she asks if I could draw them both together, so it takes a little longer until they both get the drawing and I get a photo scan of it and I continue with the drawing of the closed supermarket.

Handi Baba Chicken Kebap
Handi Baba Chicken Kebap in der Badstraße hat als Logo einen wütenden Hahn mit Fez und Armen mit Fäusten. Wer so Tiere nicht essen mag kriegt am Fenster um die Ecke in der Bastianstraße Minze Fallafel und daneben Asia Bowls. Die Geschäfte scheinen zusammenzugehören. Vorgestern habe ich hier ein Asia Bowl gegessen, das war ziemlich vorderasiatisch.

Handi Baba Chicken Kebap in Badstraße has an angry rooster with a fez and arms with fists as its logo. If you don’t like eating animals like that, you can get mint fallafel at the window around the corner in Bastianstraße and asia bowls next to it. The shops seem to belong together. The day before yesterday I ate an Asia Bowl here, which was pretty Middle
Eastern.

Ibis | Panda | Andy’s
Das Ibis Hotel am ZOB hat zwei „Beine“, am ZOB den Eingang zum Hotel und zur Messe einen Restaurantbereich. Ein Durchgang trennt die “Beine“. Unten war „Andys Diner“, mit „All American Food“, der erst vor Kurzem geschlossen hat. Im ersten Obergeschoss war jahrelang ein chinesisches Restaurant, hinter rot beschichteten Fassadenelementen. Den Gastraum erreichte man von der Taxivorfahrt des ZOB über einen Eingang unter dem Vordach. Da wo das Werbeschild des Restaurants leuchtete, ist nur noch eine rostige achteckiges eiserne Fassung und an der Tür klebt ein ausgedruckter Zettel auf dem sich das Panda Team 2023 für die 34-jährige „Treue und Akzeptanz“ seiner Kunden bedankt.

The Ibis Hotel at ZOB has two „legs“, the entrance to the hotel at the ZOB and a restaurant area at the trade fair centre. A passageway separates the „legs“. Downstairs was „Andy’s Diner“, with „All American Food“, which only recently closed. For years, there was a Chinese restaurant on the first floor, behind red-painted façade elements. The restaurant could be reached from the taxi lane of the ZOB via an entrance under the awning. Where the restaurant’s advertising sign used to shine, there is now only a rusty octagonal iron fitting and a printed note stuck to the door on which the Panda Team 2023 thanks its customers for their 34 years of „loyalty and acceptance“.

Dechant-Schütz-Straße
Die Dechant-Schütz-Straße in Grevenbroich ist zwischen Rheydter Straße und Elsbachtunnel eine Sackgasse. Ich schaue vom Ende in einen Hof, zu dem Schilder mit “MT Motors” und “PERFORMANCE” hängen, und auf die Rückseiten der Häuser an der Rheydter Straße.
Eine Frau kommt vorbei und fürchtet zuerst, dass ich “hier Autos schreibe”, womit sie wohl das willkürliche auslösen von Bussgeldbescheiden meint, bevor sie sieht, was ich eigentliche tue. Das gefällt ihr besser.

Dechant-Schütz-Straße in Grevenroch is a dead end between Rheydter Straße and the Elsbach Tunnel. From the end, I look into a courtyard with signs for “MT Motors” and “PERFORMANCE” and at the backs of the houses on Rheydter Straße.
A woman comes past and at first fears that I’m “writing cars here”, by which she probably means arbitrarily triggering fine notices, before she sees what I’m actually doing. She likes that better.
